Launch Of A New Long Distance Footpath

A new 46 mile long distance footpath called the West Pennine Way will be officially launched on Sunday 25th September 2016.

The circular route covers the whole of the West Pennine Moors from Anglezarke to the Irwell Valley and also has a 15 mile walk link to the Pennine Way between Ramsbottom and the moors above Todmorden.

A large section of the route crosses through BwDBC – from Roddlesworth Woods to Darwen Tower to Turton Tower and Edgworth – following sections of the existing Witton Weavers Way. The route will be waymarked with distinctive West Pennine Way waymarkers.

Launch details:

10:00 – Official launch of the West Pennine Way at Peel Tower, Holcombe (meet at Peel Tower car park for guided walk up to the Tower for launch). Peel Tower should be open for visitors.

10:15 – 6.5 mile walk alonga linear section of the West Pennine Way from peel Tower to Turto Tower (via Jumbles toilets and car park).

Afternoon tea, activities and tours available at Turton Tower provided by the Friends of Turton Tower and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

Return transport to cars parked at Holcombe will be provided from Turton Tower.

14:00 – A second launch ceremony on the railway bridge at Turton Tower with the Deputy Mayor of BwDBC.

Followed by an afternoon circular walk of 1.25 miles up to the prehistoric stone circle on Cheetham Close. Return to Turton Tower approx. 15:30.
