Great Wall of Daisyfield

The East Lancashire and Clitheroe Line Community Rail Partnerships adopted Daisyfield School just over two years ago and has worked regularly with the school over this period. The school sits in the apex of two railway lines; the Preston to Colne line and the Blackburn to Clitheroe line close to Daisyfield Junction.

Early in the partnership with the school we arranged for an old railway sleeper fence which separated the school playground from the railway line to be replaced, courtesy of Network Rail, with a new block and rendered wall. On completion it was felt that the wall would be an ideal canvas for a substantial piece of artwork.

After discussion with the Headmaster, Peter Fenton, it was agreed to work with class 4 children on a scheme to depict a journey from Blackburn to Clitheroe. Funding was obtained, principally from contributions to the East Lancashire CRP from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, to facilitate a local artist Alastair Nicholson to work with the children on producing work based on the style of Hundertwasser. The children were taken on a journey over the line and asked to note items of interest. Six classroom sessions followed with Alistair leading the children using the attached lesson plans and gradually building up the art work week by week.
